Floyd Patrick Smith
September 8, 1958 – February 23, 2025

Floyd Patrick Smith received his angel wings on February 23, 2025, at the age of 66. Floyd was a man whose life was defined by his unwavering determination, love for his family, and zest for life.

Born on September 8, 1958, Floyd accepted Christ as his Lord and Savior at an early age, joining Lane Tabernacle CME Church in Galena Park, where he served faithfully. Later in life, he attended Grace Church of Humble, where he served in the Media Ministry with dedication.

Floyd lived by the motto he instilled in his children: “Smittos Never Quit.” This philosophy guided him through a remarkable life full of diverse accomplishments and adventures. On his 60th birthday, he fearlessly celebrated by going skydiving with his family, exemplifying his courageous spirit.

Floyd was a man of many talents and careers. He worked as a NASA engineer, electrician, safety inspector, served as the City of Houston Safety Division Supervisor, and as a truck and bus driver. After earning his Bachelor of Science in Electrical Technology at the University of Houston, and MBA, his drive for knowledge led him to complete Law School. He was also a successful entrepreneur, owning the Galveston Storm basketball team, for which he was honored with the key to the city.

When not working, Floyd found joy on the golf course and at the beach. His love for sports was unmatched, and he was a devoted fan of many sports in every sense of the word.

Floyd was immensely proud to be a Nupe, sharing this brotherhood with his brother and son. He pledged with the Missouri City Alumni Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi, his brother Dwayne Smith pledged with the Eta Lambda Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Space City Nupes of University of Houston, and his son Justin Smith pledged with the Prairie View Alumni Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi

Floyd was preceded in death by his mother, Zilmarie Smith, and father, Jesse Lee Smith. Floyd is survived by his loving wife, Doris Gross Smith, his steadfast partner who faces her own health challenges with dementia onset Alzheimer’s. He leaves behind his devoted children, Justin Smith and Taylor Patlan(Anthony), and cherished grandchildren, Xitlali, Adonis, and Ares. He is also survived by his brothers, Dwayne Smith (Sandra) and Jesse Smith, sisters, Jessica Smith and Angela Hunter Richardson and many beloved aunts, uncles, niece, nephews, cousins, and friends.

Floyd’s enduring legacy is one of perseverance, love, and community. He touched countless lives through his hard work, generosity, and infectious spirit. He will be profoundly missed and forever remembered by those who knew and loved him.

“Smittos Never Quit.”

Dwayne, I’m so sorry to hear of the loss of your brother. I can only imagine the depth of sadness it presents for you especially. I know the closeness you two shared and distinctly remember him whooping my behind after I accidentally hit you in the head with a pipe playing “war” at the back woods near our house on 13th street. I was in shock and scared and he immediately came to your aid and defense! And of course proceeded to whoop me! I deserve it for being careless and apologized profusely. Man, was I scared! I thought I killed you! David, my twin and I are as close as you guys and I definitely get it. I’m so happy that you got all of these years with your big brother and wish you all the comfort you can find. But your brother was a very accomplished man and I’m proud to say he was my friend when we were children. Sadly however, it appears you guys pledged the wrong fraternity. Alpha is of course the way you should have gone! Lol! Seriously, my brother, you and your big brother helped David and I with your friendship and companionship when we lived in Galena Manor. Thank you and thank him. Rest in Peace my brother Floyd. .

Dennis and I had “pairs” of good friends, Dwayne and Floyd, Tommy and Roland, Carlton and Michael, Aaron and Abraham, Alton and John. We also had Tilford, Stuart, Nathaniel, Don and others whose names currently escape me. Attribute it to my age not my heart. I celebrate Floyd’s wonderful life with a community who nurtured us, chastised us, guided us and loved us. Rest in peace Floyd and thank you for the role you played in our and so many others lives.

My condolences to the bereaved family. However, I don’t know who wrote this, but you have 24 hours to edit this, removing Doris Stubblefield’s unauthorized medical disclosure. I strongly advise doing so.

Dwayne…first and foremost my sincere condolences to you and your family. As I reflect and recall with gratitude how your parents nurtured and loved their children was something to behold. Yes, Floyd will be truly missed with all the memories and the weight of this moment is hard to bear but I can only speak from my experiences that weeping may endure by night but joy comes in the morning to those who trust in Almighty God. Amen.
